And so they came…. (Shadows of My Lanta Part 1)
I’ve long lived out here in the Nevada deserts, pretty near Vegas really, ‘course, no way I could live IN Vegas, way too expensive. But a’course, I’m often seen headin’ into that huge blinkin’ city an’ pickin’ up a whore or two.
Of course, not anymore.
About 2 years ago (2040 for those that aren’t in the know) Vegas was destroyed. No competition you see. Can’t have that. In fact, anything involving women was destroyed. Oh, you may think to yourself, did men finally snap? Did they finally become COMPLETELY insane like the women so dear to their hearts and take over absolutely? Well no, not quite. I mean, at first men celebrated somethin’ different, and then they celebrated women as they dwindled, and now that women are gone, they can only fear and at the same time covet that somethin’ different.
What might that be you ask? Well, I’m gonna have to keep you in the dark on that for a bit. I’m gonna start from the beginning.
It was a cold day that day. Well, hell it’s never COLD, but it was one of those days where twilight decided to come fast and the temperature dropped with it. It was about 40 out, and for those that ain’t used to it (like me), that means it’s cold. I’d have to say it was about August. Of course, you know me, that means it’s time to sit outside the ol’ trailer and wonder why I ain’t one of those rich bastard Indians, who just seem to keep strikin oil out here. Awe well, yup, I figured my day’d come, so I guess I was alright. But I still liked wonderin’. Lookin up at the sky, about that time when the sun and the moon are both up. That always kinda freaked me out when that happened. It seems so strange, the two things in opposition. Now, I’m just your average yokel but it’s like it’s starin’ you right in the clip a’ your eyes or somethin’. The wind got stronger then, but it was heatin’ up.
Quite odd I must say.
And then the shadows fell. Like dark angel straight otta heaven they done come right down near my doors, and more. Millions of ‘em, all through the sky, all along the sand, all close, and all in the distance. It was like a takeover. I ran inside my dear ol’ trailer and flicked off the women’s tennis that was on TV (I often like to watch that, don’t you?), but it fizzled and popped and snapped. Finally a single image of a single woman stuck right up there and that ol’ TV set, then the damn thing exploded.
I ran outside then, though (sure it was odd) there was no fire. I was watchin them shadows. They was turnin inta somethin’, an’ I couldn’t quite make it all out. But it was all definitely familiar.
I looked to my left, at my good dog Butch, but Butch was movin’. I poked him an’ he was stiff as stone. ‘How the hell’, I thinks to myself. But I didn’t do much else. I was starin’ at them slowly shapin’ and solidifyin’ shadows…
