There's no argument that unless you're using a monospaced typewriter, you should only put one space after a period at the end of a sentence. Still, I was trained on a monospace typewriter, and nobody ever bothered telling me any different until my junior year of college. I'm curious how many of you automatically hammer out two spaces after a sentence automatically, or if I'm the only one who hasn't been able to break the habit.

A few years ago, I read in a grammar book that one space was preferred nowadays, so I immediately changed over like a good Grammarton clergyman. Shortly after that, I started hearing it everywhere. There's just no real point to hit it twice, I'd say.

Huh, I still do the double space thing. Never heard not to until now, actually.

I will always use two because I find it aesthetically pleasing. If Cormac McCarthy can be taken seriously (and be considered great even) while omitting all verbs from entire paragraphs, I think I can get away with an extra space separating my sentences.
Looking at every text around me, it's hard (but not impossible) to make out that 1 appears to be the standard.
I find it telling that your Junior Year of college was where you heard it, and 3 or 4 years later I would hear from the same college (the very same department!) that two was the norm, and one was specifically for mass-produced journalism (to take up less ink and space).
Also, my version of Word seems to think sentences ought to end in 2, and everything auto-formats appropriately. If I go back and redo it as 1, it gives me the green squiggles.
Crazytown.

Wow. I seriously expected to be one of maybe two people tops that did the 2-space thing.
Happiness is just a Flaming Moe away.
