About the Meadhall

The Meadhall of the Comitatus was founded in 2001 by Usurper as a Tripod site and an EZ-Board. Its name came from Usurper's fascination with the ancient comitatus structure of government. This meadhall, however, was originally to be all thegns and no chiefs.

The initial purpose of the Meadhall was to allow a group of friends, all of whom were into writing, art, gaming, or combinations of the three, stay in touch. Once articles began popping up on the site, it became a way of amusing each other and exercising our writing skills. Now, we hope to amuse the rest of the internet as well.

There've been several incarnations of the Meadhall since 2001 on six different web hosts (three free, three paid). We are on our fifth forum software, third CMS, and well, I stopped counting the number of redesigns after seven. Due to the various changes, some article dates may reflect a date they were converted to new software. On the oldest articles, their dates reflect the "last modified" date of their static html files from a backup taken in 2002. There's usually a staff-elected Director "in office" at any given time to keep the staff happy and productive. Unspeakable and Furor Thompsonicus are co-directors at present.

Meadhall membership is open to anyone with a civil tongue, two-thirds or more of a brain, and a distaste for on-site drama. Staff privileges are awarded to those with the desire and rudimentary skill needed to contribute articles.
